What to check on a BMW E36

These are the known weak points of the E36. Every seller here answers them one by one before their car can go live — so you can compare two cars on the same terms.

  • Rear subframe mounting points, from underneath
  • Cooling system: plastic thermostat housing, radiator end tanks, water pump impeller
  • Rear trailing arm bushes
  • Cracked rear light seals letting water into the boot
  • VANOS rattle on six-cylinder cars
  • Front control arm bushes

Is it genuine? What buyers check on an E36M3 shells are WBSBF or WBSBG. A genuine one has the wider front arches pressed in, an M-specific rear valance and the S50 or S52 engine. Check the engine number against the V5 or title.
