1994 BMW M5 E34 3.8 for Sale — 60,817 km, BMW Individual
A highly distinctive 1994 BMW M5 E34 3.8 with just 60,817 km, combining the final development of BMW’s legendary naturally aspirated S38 inline-six with an unusual BMW Individual specification.
This example comes from a private collection and is presented in what is believed to be Petrol Mica Metallic, paired with an extended black Nappa leather interior. It is also equipped with the sought-after Nürburgring suspension package, placing it among the more interesting specifications of the 3.8-liter E34 M5.
The E34 represents a particularly important chapter in M history: it was the second-generation M5 and the last generation to be hand-assembled at BMW M GmbH’s Garching facility.
The 3.8-Liter S38B38
At the heart of the car is BMW Motorsport’s S38B38, a 3,795 cc naturally aspirated inline-six producing 340 hp.
The engine was a substantial evolution of the earlier 3.6-liter S38 and retained the individual throttle bodies that are central to its sharp response and mechanical character.
Its 340 hp output is delivered without turbocharging, paired with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.
The result is a very different experience from later M5 generations: high-revving, mechanical and dependent on direct driver inputs rather than electronic intervention.
Nürburgring Package
One of the most important features of this M5 is its Nürburgring chassis package.
BMW developed the package for drivers who wanted a more focused version of the already sophisticated 3.8-liter M5 chassis.
Depending on production date, the package incorporated upgrades including Servotronic speed-sensitive steering, a larger rear anti-roll bar and a selectable firmer setting for the adaptive EDC dampers.
On early 1994 cars, this is a particularly desirable factory specification. BMW incorporated several of these chassis developments into the final M5 update introduced later that year.
BMW Individual Specification
The exterior is described in the source material as “Retrol-Misa Metallic,” but the specification appears consistent with the rare BMW Individual Petrol Mica Metallic finish.
Petrol Mica is a deep and complex metallic shade that changes noticeably according to lighting, giving the otherwise restrained E34 body considerably more visual depth than a conventional black or grey finish.
Inside, the car features extended black Nappa leather, maintaining the understated character of an M5 while providing a richer specification than the standard cabin.
The combination is particularly well suited to the E34: discreet at first glance, but clearly unusual on closer inspection.
Hand-Built M Character
Unlike the regular E34 5 Series, the M5 followed a specialist production process.
E34 bodies originated from BMW’s normal production network before the M5s were completed by BMW Motorsport / BMW M in Garching, where substantial hand assembly remained part of the process.
This makes the E34 the final M5 generation closely associated with that traditional small-series manufacturing approach.
Its engineering philosophy reflects the same idea. Instead of relying on a large amount of electronic intervention, the car combines a naturally aspirated Motorsport engine, manual transmission, limited-slip differential and carefully developed chassis.
From a Private Collection
This example has covered only 60,817 km and comes from a private collection.
For an E34 M5, condition and originality matter considerably because many examples were used extensively during their early lives, while others have since been modified.
A low-mileage 3.8-liter car with BMW Individual specification and the Nürburgring chassis option represents a considerably more focused proposition for an enthusiast seeking an E34 M5 with unusual factory configuration.
The appeal here is not simply performance. It is the combination of S38 engineering, hand-built M heritage, analogue controls and a rare specification that defines this particular car.
